Taking a stand on the mice invasion!!!

As cooler weather approaches, guess who is looking for a warm place to spend their Winter??? That’s right, MICE! These pesky little creatures don’t hibernate they mate, breed, and frighten the heck out of people all year long. In the winter months, they want to be warm and stay within a close proximity of a food source.

HOW DO THEY BREAK INTO YOUR HOME?

Preventing mice from infesting your home will be super important this fall as mice, vole and rat populations continue to grow in the Mid-West. Populations are rapidly expanding from Omaha, NE through Kansas City and St. Louis Metro areas. According to a 2017 report by the “Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey”  The Kansas City metro area ranks 6th in the nation for mice infested cities.  Small openings the size of a dime will allow them to move on into your home as it gets colder. Inspect the foundation of your home for holes or gaps, same with siding, doors, and windows. Even where pipes and wire lines go into your home you may find the smallest of openings that mice can break into. Before it is too late think about sealing up a these areas around the house. We suggest caulk, expanding foam or steel wool to fill in these spaces. For a small cost ($10-20 bucks) you can go to any local hardware store to find these items. Same with gutters and  garage doors. Replacing the weather stripping or caulking will make sure these areas are secure.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

Since a lot of their hydration stems from the different variety of foods they eat, the presence of drinking water isn’t going to be as important as food. These disease infested pests love snacking on items such as stored grains, breakfast cereals, and pet food. A fantastic way for you to prevent mice from infesting your home is to keep these type of items in sealed, hard plastic containers. They also love fatty and sugary foods as well including but not limited to butter and chocolates. These rodents do carry disease, so if you are to accidentally consume contaminated foods you do run a risk of food poisoning such as Salmonella or possibly contracting Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)  which is a respiratory disease that can be fatal.

WHAT ELSE ARE THEY CAPABLE OF OF????

There is one type of mouse that can lift buildings, throw cars and fly at the speed of lightning but your everyday mouse is capable of causing other damage to your home and loved ones. Chewing on electrical wires, WHY DO THEY DO THIS??????? Well, their teeth continue to grow all the freaking time.  So by using the strong wires they keep their vampire fangs short so they can continue to eat. This can create fire hazards, as well as, puts you and your family at risk. Rodents are responsible for 8% of the house fires in the United States. They can also chew on and/or damage the insulation in your walls, they create allergies or make existing ones flare up and they transport parasitic organisms that cause tapeworm and ringworm. Lovely right?

IF YOU ONLY THINK YOU HAVE ONE OR TWO…

We here at Pro Pest want to make a public service announcement so you aware of some facts about mice and how fast your home can get infested. BUST OUT THE CALCULATOR FOLKS!!!! Mice are able to reproduce at 6-8 weeks old, their gestation period is 19-21 days. There is usually 10-12 babies per litter and 1 female can have up to 5-10 litters per year. Now if that isn’t shocking this will be, a female mouse can become pregnant within 24 hours of giving birth!!!! How crazy is that?? Obviously a home can become overrun with mice fairly quickly!!

The best way to prevent these things from becoming a problem for you is to just be proactive about it, let Pro Pest help you stop them from even having a chance to stay with you this Winter.
